OBX fishin' help

Will be traveling to Winston/Salem later this week and then slipping off to fish OBX area for first time later next week. Space is limited so I am asking for help on what tackle to bring.

Is my 8.5' spin rod with 10 to 12 lb line ok ... or should I plan on 15 - 20 lb test line?

Do I want to spend time "pier fishing" or working the beach and inlets?

Is it plug type fishing or better w/bait?

Windcheaters, bombers and fin-s plastic going to work?

Can anyone recommend a nice clean place to stay?

Looking forward to enjoying the sun, beach and catching a few fish ....
