Question

Just managed to book a place in Kitty Hawk for 11/22-11/26. Had some free time so decided to go fishing. I have fished Buxton-Frisco area but not near Kitty Hawk before. Any suggestions on where to fish and for what? I guess some of the piers or Oregon Inlet would be worth it. I will probably use the 4WD so if any beach driving is needed I am willing and ready.

so much depends on the water temps at that time of year ... possibilities are stripers , reddrum ,blues . try to hit the inlet & them fish around coquina beach ..last year it was the hot spot for a while . you can also get a walk on nite fishing permit for pea island .

Took the questions right out of my head. I'm going down Sat, 11/24 til 12/01/01. Got a place at the Dunes South resort in Nags Head. Few qestions: Do I need a beach tag & if so where do I purchase one? Also is a salt water fishing license required.? From what I've read in some sites good fish are being caught right now including blue fish. This true?? Oh by the way, Kitty Hawk was the loc mentioned.

Few quick responses; No tag is required for the southern beaches (ramp 23 - ramp 55) and none is required for Oregon Inlet, i think its ramp 4. Watch out for the sand there at OI, it is a mother, especially a NE. NC does not require a saltwater license at this time.

As far as fishing reports, check out www.reddrumtackle.com. They keep a great board, also i suggest them for local knowledge. I'm heading down later this morning for two days. I'll post wednesday morning.

Do not be afraid to move to find fish. Anywhere from Kitty Hawk to Ocracoke, really depends on the water temps.

Good Luck.

We just had a nice blitz of stripers (up to 26lbs) on Thurs afternoon on the Kitty Hawk beaches. The fish could be anywhere this time of year. You will need a town permit to drive the beaches of Nags Head. I think Kitty Hawk does not allow beach driving but I have never seen it enforced.

Also most piers closed around Thanksgiving last year. If you do not find any bird activity your best bet would be Oregon Inlet.

Rick was good to see ya there......we did have a good bite monday night, I spoent most of it struggling with some bad line, but the few casts I got in paid off.

Lets anlayze what I did wrong onthe point to get that fish..........I threw a 9.5 foot spinning rod, a 2 ounce gibbs popper and used 30# whiplash on my reel........was mighty nice

Rest of the trip was uneventuful, some puppys, blues, sharks etc......

Thumbs down

Same deal here, stayed in Buck Island, Corrolla. Managed a schoolie bass off the beach in the 4x4 section. Not one bird play for the whole turkey week and did not see one ganet.

As I was leaving and stopping one more time at TW's, bird play blew up right down the street. Everybody left the store in a dustcloud (or sand cloud??). Firgures, had the wife and the truck was packed for the trip home. Stopped at the Cottin Gin and let the wife blow the new rod rack money.

Great drive down & the Chesapeake Bay Bridge is always a plus. Now down to business, Sunday hit the shores of the OBX, got everybody settled & went to the Avalon pier for a little Plank work as it was the last day for them. Worst day of the season saved for last. Thought it was me but everybody else was on the same page. Good time anyway just being there & meeting some people I have talked with over the years. Shot down to the point and there must have been a hundred or so veh's parked with more coming. Saw a couple flounder and a short striper but not much else going on. Seemed like you could feel something (Expectation) in the air as everyone stood around jawing but that day it was not to be. Following day went Nth of 30 & 34 where the most exciting thing happened was, I broke one of my heavers at the joining and still don't know how that happened cause, no way do I have anywhere near that type of heat in my cast. Musta had a crack somewhere. Drove around those beaches pretty good & that water had fish written all over it. Lot'sa vehs, lot'sa Fisherman but no fish. Went back to my place to play in my back yard as there was a nice hole back there just outside my door. Played till bout midnite but nothing happening. The locals were all telling me that the water was still to warm and they were not yet getting sustained runs. Can't say for sure but those full moons might have had something to say about this also. Fog down there so thick you need to cut it with a torch. Next morning, let a little bit of the fog burn, then went up to Hattera's Jacks and chewed the fat with him a good ole while as, he attached a brand new cooler & rod carrier complete with cutting board, on the back of the Stealth Black Durrango. Courtesy of my wife & mother. OHhh did I forget to mention that I took my wife & mother with me? Boy did I get the biz from the guys on the beach. Look, a couple nites out to diner, a couple malls & throw in a couple flea markets & you will never hear from them again. Yes I was quickly becoming one of the beaches best dressed with no fish. Anyway back to jack. Sent his regards. Now back over the Oregon inlet bridge to fish the Nth side beach. Great piece of water & a couple nice Stripers are taken but only a couple & none by me. No eels to be found anywhere Sth of the bridge so I shoot down to TW's bait store in nags head and pick up a coupl'a snakes. Drop the ladies off at the house and proceed to make or break my destiny. I go back to Oregon inlet and proceeded up the beach toward the bridge where I cast my fate upon the waters and was rewarded with a sassy shiny 33inch striper. The following morning shot back to the point to test my new found skill with no results. Stopped at Frank & Fran's on the way back & jawed there for a while. Well gonna go pit my appetite against this, deeply cured darkly smoked Virginia ham I picked up as road kill on the way back. Sea~Ya.
