Question

okay, i'm spending the week of aug. 25 - sept. 1 in hatteras village, and from the way things sound, i'm not going to be doing a ton of fishing. so my question for the locals is: what other must-see or must-do things (non fishing) should i try out while i'm there? i'll probably do a lot of kayaking, but i don't have any other plans yet. i'll have a few non-fisherman people with me too.

one other dumb question: i know cigarettes are about $10 cheaper per carton in southern delaware than they are in nj. what about in north carolina. should i load up in delaware, or are prices comparable in nc?

Don't know if you have been down there before but Bring good Skeeter repellant this time of year, aside from that, take the trip to Ocracoke and maybe drive up to Manteo and take in the lost colony, Christmas shop and Aquarium while there (don't go to the 50's retro diner on Manteo forget the name, atmosphere is nice but the food is bland), also there are a couple of good restaurants on the causeway to Manteo stay away from the all you can eat places unless you've been there before. If you have never tried windsurfing there are plenty of places to rent from in Buxton and Avon, the Canadian hole is popular there to wind surf from. Take in the Lighthouses and just relax. Most of the entertainment and things for the kids are further up in Nags Head area. You have the Kayak thing covered take a tour of the Pea Island Refuge. As far as fishing Miss hatteras is a great head boat and you can probably get RED Snapper, sea bass etc this time of year, great skipper and crew also. Check the offshore reports when you get down there, it may be worthwhile to take a charter out of Oden's or one of the other Marina's. Agreed (post below)Quit smoking and when you figure it out let me know, Iv'e tried and failed 3 times. Forgot about the Wright Brothers memorial in Kitty Hawk. What we do generally is take 2-3 day trips when we go there to do other things, Nags Head trip take in the shops etc, since the drive back up to Nags head area does take time as B Myers said. Either way enjoy the OBX it's a great place and worth the drive in IMHO. Been there 6 times in the past 3 years after waiting 20+ years to go.

Wish I was going.

Frank

Cool

good advice...the lighthouse, Ocracoke, the Lost Colony play in Manteo ( I think it is still offered then....it may end near the end of Aug. due to colleges starting back...and most actors are college students), got the the Wrights Memorial in Kitty Hawk, check out the big dunes in Kitty Hawk...and if you wanna do movies- their are theatres there or one in Avon.

Enjoy your stay.

B. Myers

BTW- from Hatteras Inlet to Kitty Hawk, Nags head Manteo- you'll have about an hour and a half drive.

and John M. says to quit smoking...known on the OBX as " the man with the perpetual unlit stogie"...or something about 6".. lol

(had to edit twice!!! you know you hang around w/ Typo too much when you gotta do that!!) lol

Forgot to mention. I quite smoking years ago but there is a Tobacco Barn on the right hand side around Grandy. My wife still smokes and she loads up there at more than half the price in MD. Hate to be an enabler

FISH.......FISH........and more FISHing.
If yer lookin for something to keep the kids entertained, head north from Rodanthe to Nags Head and Kittyhawk. Lots for them to see. Also head to Manteo to the Aquarium...small compared to Balt, and the Lost Colony, if yer kids will sit still long enough.
I think there is one fun park around Rodanthe with race cars and the like, but for kids, that is about it. Hope you have a great time.

All previously stated is good advice.
Just came back from OBX a week ago..
As you may have heard...fishing sucked.

Do go to the Aquarium in Manteo...it on the far west of Roanoke Island just before Manns Harbor. I went with my boys and had a great time. It been renovated recently and exhibits are much improved.

Best restaurant on the Manteo causeway is the Tale of the Whale. Have been to it 5 times in the past two years and have never been disappointed.

Enjoy your trip!

Thumbs up

thanks for the advice guys. i'll try some of that stuff out. i'm a bit confused about the location of manteo though ... it's near nags head, right?

as for the smoking thing, i'm what you might call a "habitual quitter" i guess i just don't want to do it bad enough. problem is, when i do stop, people actually beg me to start again because i become such a moody bastard

After you go through Kittyhawk and Nags Head, start looking for overhead signs to rt12 to Pea Island, Hatteras Island, Oregon Inlet...which will be a turn to the left. If you stay right, you will go over the sound into Manteo....curve around to the right and look for signs to the aquarium. If you would have went left, before going over the sound, that will take you to Rodanthe also.
The signs I am not to sure about what they read, cause anymore I just point my truck and it knows where to go.

There is a population of wild horses around Corolla. They do ATV and Suburban tours on the beaches and back towards the sound to find them. This would be about a 1.5 - 2 hr. trip from Rodanthe. There is plenty of shopping in Duck (on the way to Corolla) that your wife might enjoy. Also plenty of places to rent yaks, waverunners, etc. Jockeys Ridge in Nags Head is a huge sand hill. They do beginning hanggliding classes there and great kiteflying. The view is terrific, ocean to the east sound to the west.

It appears with lousy fishing predicted, that the choice to stay all the way down in Hatteras Village in August might not have been the right choice since all of the recommendations for entertainment are to the north from Nags Head/Manteo all the way to Corolla. However, as JohnM inferred from the inlet at Hatteras to the Point in Buxton and north to Pea Island have great expanses of beaches with out the crowds of Nags Head north to Corolla. You can pull up (in a 4x4) on the beach on any of the ramps and drive to an isolated section to fish, swim & sunbathe without having to deal with the crowd and noise. (the Actual Point is different story). With out a 4x4 there are many place to park on the side of the road and walk over the dune and find the same isolated beaches. The lack of the commercial amenities is most often the reason many people choose this area of the OBX.

Directions to Roanoke Island/Manteo from Hatteras Village...straight North on Rte 12, go over Oregon Inlet Bridge, go another 12 miles to intersection with Rte 64 west,Turn Left on 64W and you will be on the Manteo Causeway, Tale of the whale is on the Left.Continue on 64w go over bridge to Manteo. 64w will continue all the way across Roanoke Island to Mann's Harbor Bridge.

It will take at least 2.5- 3 hours to get from Hatteras Village to Corolla in summer time traffic.

scoop, there's a book caled 'the insider's guide to the outer banks' that you might find very helpful. it gives a mile-by-mile description of the various attractions, restaurants, etc. down there.....and there's a lot to see and do.

have a good trip!
