Buxton 6/30 to 7/6/01
Point Sat night and some huge spanish but I heard of Cobia reports from north side and R38 but fished South side nonetheless for spanish and after dark sharpnose, blacktips and spinner sharks owned the beach. Spinners would leap 4 feet out of the water before running-awesome. SW to 20. Need wind at your back and flat calm clear seas for cobia thus the north beach was it.
Sun R38 all day Critter heaven rays, sharks and one huge laggerhead turtle which kicked my but. What a powerful swimmer. Finally landed it and hook was lodged in flapper put not the barb so there was a gentle release and no harm done except to me. Got a 27 in puppy drum also. Finally hooked up with a screamer and pertin near spooled me. Had to cup spinning spool with my hand for extra drag. Finally turned her. Many times she would surface but finally knew it was a Cobia 500 yards later up the beach. Huge drop off the beach and if someone had not stopped by to grab it I would still be there. Need a gaf I guess.
48.5 lbs by 56 in and that was a small one!!!
Hardest fighting thing I ever hooked. Maybe the 90 lbers fight like rays but this one fought like a fish. Front came through Mon and screwed everything up. Fished R38 mostly
but hit Humdrums hole in the AM. Would fish whereever wind was not in my face. Contrary to all surf fishing logic, Cobia like skate water. Sharks everwhere at night. Did have 3 rods out one sunset and a school of spinners showed up. All the rods were screaming and fish were clearing the water all over the place. Thought they were gonna jump into each other. Did land 2 of the 3. 30 lbers I guessed.
Cool moonlite week but fishless from Monday on. Saw a beautiful double rainbow that stretched across entire 180 deg horizon. Always appreciate it the most when I come home.
Had operator error (me) on my computer so could not get on line. Cost me big stock trading bucks so I guess it was an expensive lesson. I'm ramblin
FISH ON!!
