I would say pompano in the wash if the water is clear...small blues, and sea mullet just beyond the breakerss..possibly a puppy drum in there too. Around sunrise and sunset look for the spanish- often you can catch a few of them off the beaches there this time of year. If you go for these off the pier.."jerk-jiggers" (Gotcha plugs) will work...just find out what color is hot that day...often yellow w/ red head..or white w/ red head.
As far as artifials- stinsilvers will work for the blues and spanish from the beach- mullet and pompano mostly will be on shrimp or sandfleas. If you have a fly that can imitate that- that could be fun. As far as striper plugs...my guess is they may produce a blue..but I wouldn't put much in plugs this time of the year. If you have a heaver- end of Rodanthe pier may produce a cobia or shark for you. If you go there...tell Waken, the guy w/ the cigars (John M.) sent you.. ![]() Good luck!! B. Myers |

I'd say leave the plugs at home, bring tins, stingsilvers etc. Gotcha's for the Spanish. I've had luck with teasers in front of tins on small blues.
Bait wise, try the piers at night with shrimp, squid, cut bait. You'll always catch something, skates if nothing else. Check and see if there are any trout in the sound by salvo. There's usually some action down buxton way. I've had some limited luck with Fin-S and small rattle traps. I'm headed down to Avon After July 4th for a couple of weeks myself. I love it. If I could only figure out a way to do my job down there, I'd be gone. Bury my dead bones in a lonely sand dune when I'm done with 'em.(I'm sure the locals love to hear that, another a**wipe from NJ moving in). Lotsa luck, you'll have a great time whether you catch or not. |

Check in at the local bait n tackle's. Lotsa friendly folks down there, they don't seem to mind helping you out. In fact they almost seem happy to help. I'm not used to that up here. You don't have to earn your dues to get a little respect from behind the counter, it almost feels like cheatin'. But then again, it's not exactly red drum season. Have a blast and don't forget lots of sunscreen.
