OK, guys, I have a Scoutmaster who's a close friend coming your way with 18 teen-age Scouts and I've told him you are wonderful guys and can help him out. Don't go letting me down (please!).
![]() My bud and the boys will be in the Hatteras/Okracoke area around the early to middle part of next week. He needs to know: (1) Do they need licenses to fish the surf from the beach on the national seashore? Is age a factor? If they need short-term licenses, what kind of price are we looking at? (2)What's your recommendation for taking these 18 guys on a half-day fishing trip on a boat? Is that enough folks to charter an entire boat and, if so, what's a reasonable offer to make? Is it entirely too late to charter a boat for mid next week? If 18 isn't enough for a charter, what type boat should he look for and can he still get a deal by booking 18 slots on the same trip? Most of these kids are salt virgins and he isn't picky about what fish are targeted, he'd just like them to catch something. (3) In relation to #2, do you have boat/captain names and phone numbers that he can call NOW to try and set something up? (4) Would any of you guys be willing to provide your name and phone # to act as a local fishing resource when they get down there and have questions? Something simple like that could go an awfully long way toward giving these Midwestern Scouts a really memorable visit to the coast. Thanks a ton for any help you can provide me, guys. If you think maybe your answers would be a little long for the board, or not of interest to most folks, feel free to email me directly at mjones@qci.net. Mike |

No license needed, at least not yet anyway.
As far as the charter, for a Gulf Stream charter, six is the limit for most of the boats as far as I know. For inshore (on the sound), you can try the Miss Hatteras out of Hatteras Village at Oden's dock. Don't know how many it holds, but I am sure it is more than 18. Frank and Fran's in Avon is a friendly and fact filled tackle shop. Their website is www.hatteras-island.com. There is also Frisco Rod and Gun and a few others. All the shops that have websites are linked to the links I gave you here, so browse around. You can also try www.hatterasharbor.com for charter info. Both those sights can also give you plenty of other links for OBX info. Good luck and hope the fishing is good, since I'll also be down there during that time frame. |

Mike, Need to know what section or where they are stationing at. I can be their contact for South Jersey as I am also fellow Scouter. If they are looking for a cheap place to camp they can give Southern New Jersey Council a call t see if they can use Camp Grice (near Elmer) or Pine Hill Scout Reservation. Pine Hill is also a good location to get over to see Philadelphia. Along the shore there are a couple of State Parks that they could stay at using the goup section ($5.00 per site with $1.00 per nite for camping). Have them cantact me through the board here on the private message section I'll try to help from there. Doug

Mike, Sorry, I miss read the post. I thought that you coming to Jersey from the Outter Banks. Best place for camp site may be the Buxton Woods Campground (between Buxton & Frisco). Best place for Head boats would be the Hatteras Village area (Below Frisco. Doug

Mike,
The Miss hatteras is a class act and your group will certainy be well taken care of. I used to camp at a place called hatteras sands, don't know if it's still there though, but it was also in the town of Hatteras. |
