I didn't but my fishing buddies are down there. The one report said Bob Eakes saw 40 guys hooked up at once and fish hitting poppers and hopkins. Dam am I gonna hear some stories when they get back.

If Bobby Eakes is talkin about this past Sat. night (the 21st) then he is tryin to boost his hopkins sales. All fish were caught on cut bait, and 40 guys were not hooked up at once. Sounds good though.

Sorry, just read the report on the red drum board. He was talkin about tonight, not Sat. night.

Got back from Cape Point late this afternoon... Starting late Saturday afternoon into the darkness there was an all out Red Drum bite. Total mayham as 75 fishers vied for position...shoulder to shoulder, 2 and 3 deep at times, on the point. Many hooked up at once. I estimated between 40 amd 50 fish over 40" w/ a handful at or just over 50". Many more between 20" and 40"... By best came Friday late afternoon w/ a yearling of about 37"... Saturday I had some more puppies and yearlings. I also hooked into a frieght train of a Red Drum at the peak of the bite on Saturday. That Drum simply over powered my 1448C Loomis Heaver..the fish was that powerful! Afer a standoff and fearful of the fish tangling up w/ other lines I made a fatal error. I tightened the drag and starting putting pressure on the fish only to watch as my line snapped when the fish was in the waves. Probably the biggest drum I ever had on...

John M is still there and I hope the big fish return for him...

Thumbs up

Poppy,

Sorry I misse y'all- John said y'all were into the fish big time!! Seems like they showed up w reinforcements tonight! I can't wait for Johns call tommorrow...

The wind is gonna be SW till Wed., I'm supposed to be back down Thu.- Mon., I'm thinking of leaving Wed. and coming back Sun., gettin in while these fish are in and in numbers!

Seems like it was the typical rat race...2-3 deep???

Anyone else have reports of this weekend? Eakes said "several hundred" (????) w/ 40 folks hooked up at one time- to me that sounds like a record bite at Cape Point...

Two weekends in a row!!!

Allen, I told several fishers after I lost that big fish that the Loomis 1448C had failed me...not enough backbone. Critter Gitter from Assateague Island for the past few years had said the same thing about the rod. In fact he reported breaking his last weekend.

And talking about breaking rods...

Normally, I would not have been using the Loomis 1448C Saturday night w/ those big fish around… However, I broke my Lamiglas 1442 during a cast on Friday night. First Heaver I ever broke...it was ugly and I am totally disgusted!

Brain...the place was a zoo! A frenzy of fishers sick w/ Drum Fever. The bite was excellent, but the truth was there were too many fishers and not enough sand at the point. Still, it was exciting and it does not get much better than Saturday night – not nowadays!

I hope John M‘s efforts pay off…I myself was tempted to stay…maybe next weekend!

Thumbs up

Poppy,

John ended up w/ 19 total for the weekend. 11 on Sat. up to 39" and then a 44" x 26 and 41" yesterday- not too bad of a trip...

I'm really tempted to leave Tuesday night before this wind change outta the NE for next weekend....

Where did your 1442 break??? What happened? You gonna add another heaver to the arsenal now??

Poppy, I fought the 44 on the 2/1 its had no problems at all its a proven club. I fought another close to my feet for abotu 10 minutes onthe outcast, it did fine. Not as much of aclub as the 2/1 but its more than up tot he task. BTW I heard Tommys rod broke sunday, not sure if its true, I didnt talk to him. If lami wont cover the blank and you gotta buy it anyway, get the 2/1 or outcast, thats my opinion not that its worth much......

Brian...the Lamiglas broke in 2 places. First the rod broke on the cast about 7" from the tip. When that happened, the broken tip section and rig broke loose...I was out of control on the follow-thru w/ momentum and hit another fishers rod who was standing next to me. That hit caused another bad crack in my rod about an 1" below the broken section.

Not sure what happened to cause the rod to break...

Of course I marched right down to the Red Drum Tackle shop and purchased a already made Heaver...Lamiglas 1502 w/ 3" cut off the tip. Have not used the rod yet...

The broken rod I dropped off at Wayne's...

Loomis whenever I get my replacement will be for 6 oz only-Never 8nbait again unless I need a back-up quickly. We all know how that works.
My lami 162MH with 6 in cut off the tip did fine on the biggins last weekend. Was casting 8 oz and cob mullet and bunker heads with no problems and this ole blank just beats em to death.
Poppy I think that new heaver you got with the trimmed tip is awesome also. Time to let OBX rest and stalk the Stripers.
FISH ON!

Hey John I heard you were hangin with my fishin buddies Mike and Jesse down there. I just talked to them on the phone and they got back late last night. Jesse got into them again real good again last night. He had three citation fish to 48 inches and he said Sea Mullet heads were out producing Bunker pretty well. That was their first time Drum fishing and the stories they had had me drooling on the phone. Looks like you guys saw Hatteras at its finest. We are possibly thinking of heading down the first weekend in May depending on what conditions look like. Now all I have to do is try and borrow some money from my parents so I can get a heaver. That reminds me anyone selling one cheap .
