Ocracoke shoals #/23 to 3/24 noon to noon
Sat -Water 62F (thank you Rutgers) winds SW 10 mph early then 25 later in afternoon
Sun - Water 53F after front and winds 25N YUCK!
First cast of year a 30 in large pup. High noon, dead low-go figure
Second cast of year a sweet 49 in. Drum.
Caught a 32,44 & 45 later in afternoon Sat. and 2-24in pups at sunrise today in the cold. Needed a long cast to hit a sweet lump at low water after wading all the way out on the edge of the bar. Once hooked it was tough to drag them all the way in as they would dig their nose in and raise their huge square dootted tail in the shallows. Nice having the whole beach to fight the fishes. I forget how gold they really are as I don't catch many in sunny mid day conditions. Awesome site to see em in the wash and curl of the waves. As the wind picked up and the tide came in I thought they would be all over the bar but only pups after dark. I should have rechecked water temps. Came home day early since after front felt like December and with no stripers around what was the point although you could still catch pups and small blues.
Great trip and another OBX memory. Finally killed that long drawn out cabin fever.
FISH ON!

CG, I thought that was you. the tradewinds board said some guy from MD caught 4 large drum. We are leaving Thursday 4 am for ocracoke, did they have fresh bait there or did you get it on hatteras island? Could you only wade to the bar at low tide? Not too crowded eh ? Last year we met Gil and poppy, look forward to meeting you and steve coleman this year at A.I.

Congratulations on your catch, Gary

Cool

Looking at the Rutgers data- I figured there had to be some drum down there.

Poppy said you were down there when I saw him yesterday in Richmond- good to know there are some good fish there.

John M.- guess we may need to take a ferry ride Sat., huh???

Sounds like about the same as last spring!

I tried to get him to try the Outcast....he was pushed for time and had a slight hand injury so he wasn't up for it.

Maybe this weekend-

Well My suspecions are confirmed. Brian we will check the weather and water and we very well may be on the ferry

Gary, stop along the way get the best bait you can. Dont count on tradewinds cause if they dont have it your hosed. I stop at all the shops on my way down then lay in a supply when I find good bait

8nBait Everyone had good bait. I always stop at Franks then RDT then Mikes at Cape Point. RDT sometimes stashes their good stuff for those select few (Guess I can't blame em since they fish also). A truck came in with bait still wiggling when I was there but they said they were were saving it so I went to Cape Point tackle and got some awesome stuff.
Seems you had to be on the bar to get the bigg ins. They may have come closer but there was only 3 of us so very little coverage at night but with the currents and howling winds I was barely clearing the bar at high tide which was about where I was standing at low water. Lots of good beach to fish so I don't think crowds will be an issue. Course now that I've plastered it all over the internet the whole world knows.
You have a large 3/4 or 1 ton white dodge also don't you. Look forward to meeting you all

Great report Dave!

Gee, there was nothin' up here all weekend, even with Bill Pusey and his "picket line" using some of Steve C.'s herring and bloodworms.

Still too cold...

CG, thanks for the update. Actually it is a Ford 1 ton, I usually have a slide in camper on the back. I think I fished a little south of you guys in the fall last year.

CG, I was telling Brian at HO's Cast-A-Muck in Richmond on Saturday that you were down on the OBX and that it would be interesting to see if you scored. I said if there is big Drum to be found CG would find them...

My cousin from VA beach (dark red Durango) was also down there this past weekend and fished mostly Cape Point...he figured he cash in on his success from the week before... But he only managed 2 puppies...said the water around the point was in the low 50s.

Anyway, nice report CG!

May head down this weekend...

Poppy, I'm going down the following weekend when water warms-if it warms. Weird I checked Rutgers for Sun morning and it showed upper 50's however my accurate handheld showed 53. Any SW and those fish will be back. Of course with the air in the 30s down there ain't helping us.
BTW looks like Virginia is finally making their side of RT 168 2 lanes. Should help during summer trips when it gets to be a circus down there.

Poppy if you go let me know, we are goign barring a horrendous forcast at this point.

I am expecting alittle southerly breeze later inthe week. with the warm up predicted and the fronts moving through looks good for southerly breezes Of course my amatuer metorology is worth exactly squat

168 is getting closer to being a real highway, that will save me a few more minutes on my way doen
