Hello fellow striper-fishing addicts. I am looking for all kinds of info about coming down to fish your famous area. I am planning on coming down Presidents Day weekend with my family. We have a camper and I am looking for a campground close to THE BEACH {your fish}.
My Questions:
1- Can anybody recomend a campground open this time of year?
2-Where is the best surf fishing this time of year?
3- Is there walk on access? I dont have a 4x4
4-Tackle recomendations? This is mostley 8 and bait, correct?
I am going for the fishing, My wife and 3 daughters are looking for-clean beaches, sea shells and a restaurant that will allow in someone who hopes to smell like FISH.
From what I have read on your forum it sounds like I may be coming down a couple of weeks to soon, but I cant wait any more!!! I was up at the surf this beautifull morn. throwing plugs at empty water just to keep my sanity. Any info on these questions and any other info the experts and locals have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any responses and I will be glad to share any info I have of fishing Raritan Bay and our central N.J. area.

Thanks
Jim Breese

Try this one out. www.camphatteras.com . We have stayed here several times and its most one of the best we have visited. It is in Rodanthe which puts you in the middle of the island basically. They have beach walk over and the bath houses are well maintained. Try Lisa's Pizza while you are there as well.

Cool

not an expert ; but here goes
1. nps is probally closed this time of year , i would post ?on reddrum board about campgrounds[http://www.reddrumtackle.com/cgi-bin.../trdboard.cgi]
2. best fishing .. right now it is slim pickings ; probally south of the point would be the best bet check fishing reports on reddrum [http://www.reddrumtackle.com/cgi-bin...ngreports.cgi]
3.best walk on access is probaly the one right across from the ferry docks on H.I.or the old light house location ( the jettys )
4.tackle...i would take everything you have , 8 & bait is good for the 'point', but there is pleanty of other fishing ,trout which is light tackle pops into mind ,medium tackle for puppy drum.
5.beaches are clean , shells everywere & most resturants don't mind if you smell like fish ( they just don't like waders)
6. here is a link to an obx map ( it is a realty map but pretty good)[http://www.outerbeaches.com/hatterasisland.htm]
7. OBX visitor info site [http://www.outer-banks.com/index.cfm]
8.found this link with phone #'s of motels & campgrounds [http://www.outerbanksfishing.com/Tou...fo/motels.htm]
9. also an OBX links page [http://www.outerbanksfishing.com/Sit.../linkpage.htm]
hope this helps

I'll add in my $.02.....

I have found the north sides of the Kitty Hawk, Avalon and Nags Head Piers to be good spots to hook up with specks. Get there before first light and throw grubs and mirrolures at them.

You can also try near the Bodie Island Light...a place known as Green Island Slough. You can wade fish for specks and puppies there. I wouldn't recommend going it alone as there are holes there and if you go in you'll most likely need help getting out.

The south side of Oregon Inlet is also a good place. There's a parking lot there, and you can follow one of the trails back and fish off the rocks. You can catch stripers there, I've caught big flounder there. There's a pool area near the parking lot, and you can wade out there close to the bridge and cast to stripers and specks...and anything else that'll bite. You can also try the catwalk on the Bonner Bridge.

There are also a couple good spots further south, like ramps 23 and 27 in the Salvo area.

If you're on the northern beaches, you can drive down the beach road, and make frequent stops at beach access areas, empty rental house, parking lot, etc., and check out the ocean. Look for the birds working. Chances are there are Stripers working under them. (sometimes whales)

It's been a while since I lived down there, so I can't really help you with a campground. I'd follow the links these other guys gave you. I know the one in Rodanthe is nice.

Plenty of places to eat, depending where you stay. Email me and I'll give you my recommendations.

Good Luck.
