John, in my experience most of our Cobia fishing is done by live bait or soaking bait on the bottom. Occasionally we can sight cast to them, but the vast majority are caught on some type of bait. Has something to do with the tanic color of the water during the time they are here.

On the other hand you can find them around the ocean bouys and cast to them there. I by no means profess to be the expert on them, but all our articles give pretty much the same conclusion.

JohnM check out OuterBanksFlyfishing.com . That is Brian Horsely's website. He is the Flyfishing expert down there. He has a message board and I am sure if you post this message he will be able to answer it for you. He catches does well on cobia on the fly in june in a boat. I tried it a couple years ago but we couldn't find any. But I think he had me throwin big white decievers. Its gotta be tough to hook them on a fly from the surf. Do you guys see them in pretty close sometimes? www.Outerbanksflyfishing.com

Fishhunter I hear ya.....what I was thinking was that when we see a cobia trailing some rays or another cobia we need something that we can throw ahead of the jig or spoon. Like a teaser.......something to stay up in the water column better and in thier site...ya know what I mean? given my choice I will throw live bait to them if that doesnt work I want to have a fly all ready to go.........

Supa....you come one down and we will show ya......we see them literally running the first wave, 60#+ fish 20 geet off the water line someitmes......the idea is to throw them a jig with a big ol teaser above it..... its an idea I hatched friday so Iam not sure if it will work....

Yeah I have seen them pretty close in off the piers down there. They seem to like white bucktails and I have seen two caught on the fake rigged eels. I think they would be pretty easy to keep up in the water column. Give that teaser idea a try too that sounds good. You better hope you don't hook two thougth. That could get ugly. How consistent is the fishing? Are there a couple caught a day when the action is good? I would definitely like to try it but I am usually in the vineyard when the cobia bite is hot down there.

Yeah Brian, its been here a couple weeks.......

Supa I have bene thinking about the rigged eels too. Problem is casting them. You have to use a heaver or some heavier rod along those lines........The issue is a rigged eel wont load the rod........

I have seen guys catch them off the piers on spinning tackle up to 45 pounds. But I imagine in the surf line capacity could be a problem.

Thumbs up

Supafly,

On the surf it's good to have a large reel like the SL30 or some of the Abu 7000 series. The Penn 525 will do it too, but you have to "lean" on them a little more.

They are caught outta the surf alot more than you think.
