In this pic you can see lines on the template. They correspond to the centerline and ends of the finished plug. The forward edge of the piece under the template is exactly under the center line of the lathe centers. I positioned this using a square. By positioning the template with the ceterline of the plug over the edge I start out very close. As mentioned in the earlier post, I actually start with the center line on the template over the edge by 1/8" or so and turn the plug oversize. Then I slowly move the template centerlineback towards the edge until I get exactly the size I want. This is the original setup before I added hold-down screws for the template.

Well, here's my homemade duplicator thingy. It is simple to build and simple to use. I didn't have any 8/4 oak so I used stuff I had laying around like this piece of handrail. I scrounged some nuts and bolts and scrap melamine, and the only thing I bought was the 2 black knobs and 2 t-nuts for them for about 7 bucks. I had some plexi hanging around too for the template. I used part of a hinge pin for the follower but I don't think I ground it to enough of a point so I may grind the cutter point a little also. It really is fast to work with, I wish I had built it sooner ![]() I really didn't have to sand all that much off the blank, it comes out fairly smooth. The trick is definately getting the template lined up where it needs to be, but once you accomplish that it's a piece of cake ![]() Rich, yours looks great too, I have one of those lathes also. Thanks a million fishing bum wannabe [This message has been edited by slipknot (edited 01-29-2003).] |

Slipknot - Looks good. Looks "TOO" good. I'm tied up with work the next few day but I'm planning to get the bugs out on Saturday.
What kind of bit are you using? Rich |

The plugs are white pine. The yellow color is a fresh coat of Thompsons water seal. It needs to dry about a week before priming and painting. Then I plan to paint a lot of florescent orange carrots.
Nice job slip! For templates I have been using scrap hardwood that I had around the shop. I rip it to 5/16" - 3/8" thick. I found that adding handles to the sides of the duplicator add a lot of control. Fred |

Attached is an illustration of the way I ground the bit for the duplicator. Sorry, I have run out of bits to send out. You could grind a drill bit to shape or get a blank one at www.mcmaster.com. "Lathe bit", 1/4" x 1/4" x 2 1/2", $4.09@. They also have some nice looking bits in carbide, as well as stainless wire and 5 1/4" long 1/8" dia drill bits etc. Whoever originally posted McMaster-Carr, my deepest thanks.

BM,i have to re shape the chisel more to the shape FBW posted the picture of than i think it will be the balls.the chisel left a few nice tear outs in the maple, ithink it would really tear the AYC up pretty good
