Word is the Coast Guard has extended the fence from the fishermans trail down below the waterline cutting off all access west of the cove. Supposedly a camera is being installed as well. Seems the bastages are serious about keeping us out

I particularly like the timing of this - did they think no one would notice?

Supposedly it's the coast guard and is due to either security issues or safety involving the firing range (I've never once heard a shot fired at night).

The cynic in me thinks it might have something to do with the redevelopment of the Hook and wanting the fishermen out.

Think about it.

They doubled the night permit fee.
They've removed access to the Rip.
I'll wager cash they next bar us from fishing the bay side north of the ranger station. We technicly haven't been allowed to since 9/11 but it hasn't been enforced. Betcha they start.

Guys, this issue has to be brought to your congressman as it involves Federal Property. Here is a letter I sent to Congressman Frelinghuysen.

----------------------
RE: Sandy Hook Surf Fishing Access

Dear Congressman Frelinghuysen:

We are appealing to you for assistance in a matter of importance.

As an avid surf fisherman, I was dismayed to hear that the Coast Guard has erected a fence, which will block access to most of Sandy Hook. As you may be aware, Sandy Hook is one of the most productive surf fishing locations on the East Coast, and its loss would be devastating. For several years, surf fisherman have seen accessible locations be eliminated by beach replenishment and private development. Recreational fishing is extremely important to the New Jersey economy, and further degradation of accessible fishing locations is unacceptable.

We respectfully request that your office investigate this situation, and take appropriate steps to have the fence removed.

Sincerely,

Richard J. G

Anybody want to post some congressional email addresses or even mailing addresses?? We've done some fast letter submissions in the past that way.

This sucks!! You know they are going to shut it down completly when those stupid a$$ birds start nesting. Really, whats going to be left when they shut down the southern part to the right of the trail? 100ft between the new fence and the ropes protecting the plovers?? You'll have 50 guys elbow too elbow out there. I'm just gonna start setting up 50 rods on the first few lots during bathing season. Then the swimmers can start looking for places to access. I really liked going out there during the summer. Getting away from swimmers, and walking the flat areas for fluke.
Not too mention night time trips etc..
This is BS!!
