right now i am useing a lamiglass gsb1201l paired with a zeebaas zx22 which i admit isnt the best combination for maximizing my distance with lures. although i am consistantly around the 100 yard mark when throwing an ava 27 diamond jig. i would like to increase my distance and still have a set up that can battle large fish. any suggestions for good rod and reel spinning combination that i can use to send a 3 oz diamond jig or similar metals way out there?

If you are using 2-4 oz metal, a fast graphite blank in the 11' range would give you very good distance. Paired with a reel such as the Saltiga Surf, you could hit 150yds+ in favorable conditions and depending on the shape of the tin.
I use an AFAW Estuary with a ZX27 and hit 150yds with 3oz. The estuary has a soft tip so you can really feel the action of the lure. Not a good rod past 4oz. There are factory rods out there, Shimano, Daiwa, etc. which will cast long also. 11' is my recommendation for max beach distance while being easy on the hands and back. For about the cost of a Saltiga, you may want to see how much a larger spool and rotor is for the ZX22. The Saltiga will out cast the ZB but it will not out last it.

No 11'+ real high performance casting blanks are made here in the States, as such they are all two piece for shipping. I was going to recommend CTS; the distributor will be staying in Seaside Park this weekend and into next week demoing these rods. The 11'-6" 1-3oz is incredible, thin, light (finished weight 11.7oz with titanium Lowriders) and a rocket launcher. That stick has been well received by a lot of guys in your area (and your club) as the rating is "with bait" so it throws 4oz pencils to the horizon. 3oz metals on it are just insane. Email me at surf.fish.ibsp(at)gmail.com if you are interested in casting CTS.

Do yourself a favor and check out the CTS 11'6", I have one built by Heaver and I am impressed. Sarge was spot on in his description. My only problem with the rod is I have only used it one time
I've used it on 2-3 oz metals and lures and they will fly! Haven't tried it on the lower range yet, my gut tells me it will not perform as well as my old estuary, but you never know.

I have a blank in my garage but have not built it. I love my Estuary too much to cheat on it.

The guy I remembered selling the AFAW is Tommy Farmer at Carolina Cast Pro. Google Carolina Cast Pro and you should fine his website. I don't know if he still has the rods though cause I remember reading many people have problems getting AFAW rods.

As long as you can handle it athletically , longer is better for distance. First thing that came to my mind were the 11 foot ara (XRA) blanks. Probably a XRA 1322. You could also look at a Century Tip Tornada ultra light and there's another Century that is less expensive and long but the model escapes me now. Big Dave has posted about it a lot so maybe a search of posts on this forum using Century as a keyword might bring it up.
I would look at and even maybe try an 11 foot ara if you can find someone who has one and is willing to let you try it a few casts. The 1322 is a very popular blank so there may be someone near you with one. Almost forgot to say that 100 yards you already get is not bad anyway. |
