Salt Water Fly Tying Book

What, in your judgement, is the most comprehensive, with step-by-step instructions, book on tying salt water fly's?

Pop flyes is one of the best. Very detailed. If you are looking for patterns I would recomend saltwater flies of the northeast. Hundreds of patterns but no step by step.

If you're tying flies for the Northeast, I feel "Saltwater Flies of the Northeast" by Angelo Peluso covers just about every productive fly you could possibly want to use and would be my first choice. In writing his book, he solicited patterns from all the successful flyfishermen he knew and it's most comprehensive with color photos and, contrary to the above comment, I do feel the instructions are pretty much step by step or at least easy enough to follow to complete the fly successfully.

Bob Popovics' "Pop Fleyes" covers the art of tying epoxy flies such as his famous Surf Candy and my favorites, the Hollow Fleye and Bucktail Deceiver with loads of information about materials and tying techniques. I consider this book a valuable addition to my library but as good as it is, it doesn't cover the standard flies which are not of his design.

Lastly, the first book I purchased as a beginner fly tyer was Lefty Kreh's "Saltwater Fly Patterns" and this contains an extensive reference of all the standard flies used in any fishing location which will work anywhere. Another great book but, again, general tying instructions, not step by step.

My first choice, though, fishing in NY, Mass. and Florida would be Peluso's book.

I'll second Pop Fleyes, my copy is page worn from refrencing it so often. Even with all the on-line accessability to fly patterns and tutorials, I think it is almost mandatory to have a copy if you tie salt water patterns.

Essential Saltwater Flies (Paperback) ~ Ed Jaworowski (Author). Great book to start with if you're getting into saltwater tying.

Another thumbs up for Saltwater Flies of the Northeast, as far as I know it is the most comprehensive collection of NE flies out there.

FishHawk - I agree with others - Mr. Popovic's book is a great place to begin your tying ventures. It meets the criteria you set.

I would like to add that although it does not have patterns, or step-wise procedures for complete flies and also, at almost 3x the cost of Mr. Popovic's book, "The Fly Tiers Benchside Reference" presents an incredible amount of fly tying techniques spanning nearly the entire traditional fly tying spectrum.

After spending time trying to figure out methods mentioned in other pattern books, or saltwater fly compendiums, I discovered that this book describes them with great picture how-to's. Check it out.

I agree Bob Pop for me is the best for tying saltwater flies. Only I have the interactive CD called "Tying flies for salt water" by Dick Stewart & Farrow Allen an elkwing production. It has BobPop as the feature tyer doing step by step tying and he ties his classic surf candy and other great flies. Also featured on the CD is a library of other saltwater patterns and their recipes.

It's certainly not the most comprehensive, but if I could have only on book on saltwater fly tying it would be Ken Abrames' Perfect Fish.
