Default Smart cars

Please help me understand why is it that everytime I drive by one of these smart cars I shake my head?
I can't fathom how someone could buy one of these cars. If they are energy efficient, it's because the person driving it will die upon any impact thus removing their carbon footprint.

i was first introduced to them on a visit to europe in 2000. over there they are great for the narrow roads and short trips. over here in america, the roads are mich wider and distance driving is more the norm. they are a great car, the US is just not the right market for them.

I know what you mean.
I saw a picture online of an accident involving a smart car. It was crushed between 2 trucks, and the whole car length was reduced to no more than 1 or 2ft. I can't imagine the condition of the drivers body from such a crash.

You can always modify it and turn it into a "monster smart car", look it up on google.

That picture has been shown with just about every small car named as the car. I've seen it called a Fit which I own, a Versa, Scion,Mini Cooper and a Smart Car. Maybe you might feel better if you knew the smart car was made by Mercedes. Mini Cooper's are by BMW.
Can't state #s about the smart car but the Fit has a 5 star front seat crash rating and carries 7' and 7'6" one piece rods in interior overhead racks 8" and above rods have to be 2 piece.

Tom,

The fit car looks pretty cool, 4 door correct. I'm talking about the 2 door smart car. it looks like circus car and I can't see walking away from an accident in that vehicle.

We have these smart cars at my place of business and they are crap in my opinion. Body panels are all plastic, the hood is held on by two plastic clips and a piece of nylon strap, when you open the hood the whole thing comes off. Nearly impossible to get up enough speed to merge onto the highway.

One positive thing about it is you can parallel park it in a spot just longer then the car.

Death Trap!!!!

Friend has the red and black one.
He is a car collector so for him the Smart Car is a novelty.
My understanding is that Toyota Corollas gets better milage than Smart Cars. (Or equal.)
If I were shopping around for a "roller skate" I'd want one bigger than the Smart Car.

Default i like smart cars

when i see one, still kinda stare in a kinda bewilderment,
maybe its the italian in me, have an affinity for small cars,

what i dont like about the smart cars
is price, lots of other cars in similar price range i rather have.
also fuel economy,
other small cars get similar if not better MPG's than smart car.
so other than novelty and coolness factor why get a smart car?
