Default Got a Free Unisaw Yesterday

A fellow SOL'er offered an o"old table saw" to me he was recently offered. Being one who likes to refinish old arne,I jumped at it not knowing if it was a benchtop, contractor or cabinet saw. I figured anything to work on would be fun.

I was rewarded with a 1968 Unisaw!!!

SOL and the members are topnotch!!!

I plan on a full restoration... New front access door, motor cover, correct switch, etc... I also need to make it DC compatible. I'll run a 6" duct straight to the base and add an overarm blade guard/ dc port as well.

Plan is to use it as a dedicated dado machine, maybe use it for all my crosscuts with a new cross cut sled... I'm still planning what to do.

Can't wait to get started.

your right..that home grown switch should go...only needed to rebuild the motor once on our's that was 37 years old....before the saw melted in the shop fire...replaced the saw with a powermatic.

There are still parts available for old Unisaws. I'm hoping some member offers me a Powermatic 30" thickness planer with auto sharpen.

Jay, if replacement parts from Delta are thru the roof, you might try looking for parts for that saw over on owwm.com, core group last I knew was a bunch of deltaholics ...some owning early Unisaws back to the late 30's when they didnt even come with serial numbers yet. The google group under the owwm name allowed people to query the membership for specific info and there were a wide variety of things in the classifieds. Interesting site for anyone into older woodworking machinery......Im still hoping to stumble onto a wide Porter jointer to bring back to life.

Its pretty common seeing a unisaw without the door.

You definately dont want that switch.

Ive got a 12" Delta with a massive top and fence I may redo this winter, sitting in the corner at the moment tho.

Chris

added.......and one nice thing about stumbling solo onto a unisaw in someones garage is if you have to you can load it yourself onto a pickup, things become a nightmare when you stumble onto a tannewitz or someting similar.

I'm familiar with OWWM, thanks.
One of the miter gauges I got (square one) belongs on a 30's style Unisaw and I already have guys begging for it.

The saw now sits in my shop in a couple dozen pieces....

I should add, the trunnions are now out of the saw and on the bench. the cabinet sits totally stripped of everything.

Jay, what did you use to clean up the wings/top? Does it need any sealer?

400 grit on a random orbital sander Took all of 5 minutes and no elbow grease

I will get a coat of Johnson's paste wax after it's reassembled.

I still need to clean up the edges and underneath and paint it. This was just a test to see what was under the grime. I will likely polish it up some more with 1000 grit and then put on the wax.
