Default Rainbow colored materials

I have been perusing the net in search of pictures of different forage items; sand eels, bunker, silversides, and the like. They appear to be a lot like some kinds of freshwater baitfish. That is in no matter which way they look when being hit by light from one direction, they can change position and the light from another direction will make them look different from the previous.

If that all makes any sense....

My question is, does anybody use rainbow type materials to try and copy this characteristic? My feeling is that the rainbow kind of gives the fish the color they want to see. It's proved quite successful for me with trout, bass, and other fish. I realize fishing a rip or wherever for stripers is a long way from a run on a trout stream, or is it?

The only rainbow material I use is rainbow crystal flash and its one of my favorites, especially on a chartreuse/white Clouser.

you can mix UV flash, yellow and pink and blue and green but the color are subtle and have to use a yak or PB or very light colored BT to get a rainbow effect

I believe this is a similar observation that Mr. Ken Abrames had that led him to mix different colors of bucktail when tying his R.L.S. style patterns. He presents this philosophy in his book "A Perfect Fish - Illusions in Fly Tying".

When I sit down to tie large scale patterns I typically incorporate mixed BT. There is something really awesome about a blue, yellow, chartreuse, pink, dab of orange combo that really pops out! Mind you, each of these are not in equal distribution.

Show us what you have tied recently. I'd love to see.

PS - I have discovered that Pearl Gold Angel Hair is and EXCELLENT flash "color" out there. It appears to take on the color properties of any other color material it blends with. Good stuff.
