Anyone else had any issues? I don't mind a little wear and tear, or replacing a few odds and ends when I have to, but I think I killed a drive gear. Here's a picture of it, for some odd reason it's two pieces bolted together. I can grab the stem on the back and it has almost 1/4" of play in it. Everything is tight, and I can't see a way to fix it. Any ideas? Quick fixes?

What's under the screwed down cover? Could there be an sprag type clutch that is the anti reverse? You may just need to replace that item? I'm not familiar with that reel but it appears that something under that cover could be the issue. Tear it down and let us see it. OR check the schematics.

IIRC that does indeed slip around because the bearings and shims are what set the ultimate position/pressure of the gear.

How much abuse? 160-180lb Tarpon every time you go out?
![]() 1/4" of play is excessive. Is the play on the drive gear when you take it off? What is the condition of the Pinion? I could see the soft brass of the pinion wearing before the drive gear. But if it's on the drive gear itself that's another issue.

The gear itself is fine, it's the part under the collar that wiggles. It comes off the drive gear in a single piece. I've taken a few big fish on this reel, but not the kind of action I would think would damage it.

Thats very interesting. Let us know what Shimano plans to do and any findings let us know. I have Saragossa's and new baitrunners with this same type of multi piece drive gear.

Local,
Do you mean rotate the post back and forth or slide it in and out of the gear?

It rotates. Initially I believed I had just worn a little play in the handle, this should work out better. New handles for sustains are not cheap. I talked to a service rep, she said send it in. We'll see what happens, I'll keep you guys posted. |
