  1. that sounds like a really sweet deal on the Vapor Trail though.....
  2. On the website the Slammer is only 1 oz heavier. But in the 5000/5500 size (what I am out for) the slammer is almost 6 oz heavier. I'm not sure how much of a difference that would make throwing plugs all day from the surf. Again, no dunking.
  3. thank you Tony I appreciate that
  4. Okay thanks again guys, I'm looking into it now that its getting cooler out and want to keep fishing. Appreciate all the info.
  5. Thanks guys. I was reading a couple of older threads where guys were having some issues with the Clash spool not coming off the shaft and it got me a little worried. I know the slammer 3 is the flagship of the cheaper reels without going to the Torque, and seems wonderfully built. Just still debating on the weight factor of the clash, since I will be using this to throw plugs all day/night. And, wondering why the huge jump in weight (8 oz) between the slammer 4500 and 5500 size. Wondering if this reel being so heavy would make me regret not getting the lighter clash. Thanks again.
  6. Hey Tony, I'm currently also trying to decide on the 4500/5500 for a 9 ft rod, could you possibly get a side by side pic of those two when you get time? Thanks dave
  7. Not trying to hijack. Does this mean in NY we need to register on some marine registry to surf fish? I have my Saltwater fishing permit I got for free at a sporting goods store. Is this what you mean or do I need something in addition to this for surf casting on Long Island? Thanks dave
  8. this is the funniest thing i read all day
  9. Hmmmm....Thanks, I was kind of thinking that. I also don't think I would ever need the huge drag that the Slammer has, but it does seem better built. That's what's making it a tough decision.
  10. I know I've been asking a lot of questions lately, but having a hard time deciding on a new reel for Long Island plugging for stripers/blues. I don't use bait, just lures/plugs. And, I need some advice. I'm going to be ordering either the Clash or the Slammer 3 very soon, and would love to hear some insight on which you would pick and why. I've used the search function, but I keep pulling up threads about the clash spool being stuck on the shaft so that's not really helping. When I go out I'm casting plugs all day, and was thinking the Clash being super light might be the best for my surf fishing (sometimes pier and jetty also). I also walk up and down the beach, no 4x4 for me. I don't plan on dunking either, but they will get splashed I'm sure. On the other hand, seeing reviews on the Slammer 3 lately, seems like its possibly a better built reel, but very heavy. I will be using it on a 9ft or 10 ft surf rod, thinking somewhere around the 5000 size. If anyone feels like giving their experiences or suggestions, it would sure help my decision. I know both reels have good drag and all, but really don't know if I should go light and strong with the clash, or tough and heavy with the slammer 3. Any and all opinions would be greatly appreciated. If it were you, which would you pick and why? I was originally thinking the SSV as an option, but i've been hearing that the SSVs aren't all that great after a year or two of use so sticking with these two options now. dave
  11. Yea, I've been seeing some crazy stuff over at the CCC. But, because of time and things being a bit tight right now financially, just won't be able to do that unfortunately this year. I'm hoping some of that craziness rubs off on Long Island waters.
  12. Hey Scoob, new youtube subscriber here lol. When you say add more stretch, I'm assuming you mean the longer the leader is the more stretch it has? Sorry for the newb questions but is that's what's known as a shock leader? I mean the distance from the rod tip to the plug, I don't use bait or sinkers just plugs and metal lures. That exact leader actually, those are the ones I've always looked for 6" and thin. They make others that a bit thicker gauge wire which I stay away from. .....Thanks for the help guys. Yes, I plan on changing out my wire leader set up for mono or flouro. Now, with the longer leaders, wouldn't it make more sense with a heavier action rod? I mean, I tend to go for moderate whippy rods, and i'm wondering if the rod flexing PLUS the long momentum leader, will it be too much "stretch?" Okay, last question. I've been trying to learn what I can here, and been watching a lot of John Skinners videos. He always seems to use a swivel between the leader and main line and says it helps with line twist. Seems not that many people on here actually do this, so very curious about that also. And if I'm going the line to leader knot and NO swivel, what knot would be good for going through the guides on a Penn Carnage 2 rod, if I keep around a 6" to 12" drop from the rod tip to the lure? Thanks again all for the help. Its very much appreciated. dave
  13. Hey guys. Advice needed......I've just found this site, always fished by myself, and have an odd question. Everyone I see is using a 3 ft. leader for stripers/blues. I watched countless vids now, and everyone is doing it this way. I fish long island, and I've always ever used a 6 inch leader, usually the very thin black metal cord ones, and reel my plug or lure up right up to the leader, with only the 6 inch cord and plug from the tip. Then, when I cast I use only the flexing of the rod to throw my lure out, and I've always been a great caster. I get a lot of distance like this, even when I'm just giving a light cast. So, am I crazy? Its always seemed to work fine, and the 6 inch leaders take quite a beating from blues mostly, but never had much luck with bass which I'm guessing is because of my leaders. I'm learning so much on here, and I know this one sounds silly, but I kinda need to ask. Everyone seems to get the momentum of the cast from the initial energy in the leader drop, but again I've always got it with the rod flex. Should I change this altogether? Would using a 3ft mono leader possibly be the reason bass don't take my bait? Lets say I used a 3 ft mono but still ran through the guides for a 6 inch drop from the tip.....would that make ANY sense? Again, I'm learning a lot and have never been a great fisherman, and I only realized the other day from reading here, that bass don't even really like to eat during the day, so I know I'm all over the place. But would love to hear opinions and suggestions on my rod flexing with a short leader technique. Thanks for any advice in advance. I'm kind of overwhelmed how off base i've been all these years fishing. dave
  14. Thanks guys for the answers that all makes perfect sense. Okay, sorry again for hijacking. Carry on...
