  1. I went out for a trip to the surf, managed 1 fish , surprised myself as I have not been on the beach at all this year. Was a great time overall.
  2. Landed my first diaper striper from the stanislaus, put up a decent fight but nothing like a beach fish yet!
  3. Long time no post it feels like! Well after 6 years being on the peninsula I have moved out to the central valley (Modesto specifically) for school and find myself itching for striper action. I have spent a good amount of time searching but I was hoping someone might be able to guide me into the right direction a to what gear to throw and where to throw it at! I have all kinds of gear from surf striper to ultra light trout and surf perch. I just need a point in the right direction to see what I need to see ahaha. Thanks everyone, have a great 2018!
  4. Landed a couple fair sized perch on gulp sandworms with 1oz lead
  5. landed many of perch in the pitch black, the two next to the rod were 16" and 15" landed about 10p on shrimp, both hit within 2 minutes, by the fifth big one my backpack was weighed down enough for the hike back up the cliff to be tiresome. Biggest of the night was 17", Perch hit at night and i don't care what anyone wants to say!!
  6. I love my Wright and Mcgill 8'6" steelhead rod, 1/2-2oz and only 70 dollars, paired with a pflueger president and its a great setup on 10lb or 15 lb braid, It was originally bought as my schoolie rod but has the perfect action for 1-2oz of lead against the strong currents i get at my local beaches. I had a 10'6" steelhead float/drift rod with too light of a tip, even a half ounce would FLY but it had so fast of a tip i could not like it, shortened it by 10" and now it feels like it will hold up to the current a lot better than stock. landed some good 10lb striper on the surf with the 8'6" rod so it has a real trustworthy backbone in my experience and a hell of a bargain at 70 at dicks sporting goods.
  7. Does anyone know of any laws around using beach wheels to walk a small boat across a beach to launch in the surf? like a zodiac or similar size boat.
  8. funny, most of the perch guys target redtail for meat texture and taste. barred are good eating when they get to a good size. Try a redtail if you ever catch one of legal size!!
  9. caught a beast of a redtail perch the other day, hit on a hair raisor, pulled a bit of drag too!! measured in at 16-17"
  10. thanks, that pattern is actually in the foam! its all cut and contoured by the boys(or girls) at phenix, my favorite part is the reel seat to be honest... so nice to be able to move the reel a bit based on how i am fishing for the week be it poppers or hair or swimmers. well worth the coin i shelled out for it.... has landed me a decent number of surf bass too! *also thanks everyone, i estimate it weighed over 12lb but under 16.... the world will never know... as i only picked her up for but a brief moment to haul her back to the sea.... and when i picked her up she flopped and left me a KNARLY rash on my palm from her mouth... and i was SHOCKED by her MASS..... cant wait till i get into a certified over 25lb bass
  11. well its been long enough, no one can follow the "hot bite" that landed me this girl, and quite a few others coming in a bit under her stature. My Personal Best...fortunately....unfortunately....un-weighed or measured as i wanted her back in the surf ASAP.... but she swims another day!! hopefully still! Rod is a 11' Phenix BlackDiamond with a beaten penn sargus 5000 for comparison. *apologies for the huge format....i don't know how to fix it....anyone willing to do it for me? ill re upload the pic and credit whoever helps us all
  12. something hit my hair raisor today that would have rivaled that girl right there, took 100+ yards of 20lb 832 off my reel in a few seconds.... never have i seen that little line on my spool since the day i spooled it up..... then BAM... little too much finger drag trying to keep her out of the deep..... they will be back though....
  13. Welp, Got my first SLAM on a SP minnow this morning first cast, he spit it tho, two cast later same spot, hook up again, this time i get to see its pretty back as it launches my hook. nothing for a while after. work my way up the beach into really flat section, throwing pencil popper, one NICE gulp 5 yards out in a trough. missed him ..... try some more no luck... musta spooked him out. work my way back to where i started casting along the way a bucktail, nothing, then i get back into familiar water... where i missed the first two. put back on a sp .... wait for the wave set.....and cast......two cranks one jerk AND BAM IT IS ON! ..... lots of action for my previously stale year.
  14. i bought a STORMR typhoon surf jacket, neoprene outer shell, shed water like a tarp. AND provides some positive buoyancy.....cotton kills in the wet... and the slight amount of flotation from the jacket and waders combined might just be what keeps me alive if a nasty sneaker wave takes me out one night.
  15. im glad he finally got the hankering to follow, he just turned 15 so he's got his last free year of fishing, so i chose bait fishing on the outgoing he seemed to like it, didn't get discouraged when the line popped from a bad cast, got him laced back up n back in the water to hookup on his first one. maybe when he get a bit more comfy with the game i'll pickup a fair rod/reel for for him and some waders, gotta keep him off the net n couch all day (i live with our grandparents helping them out so its a bit hard) hopefully i can hookup one or two striper this year to get him the infection.
