  1. The seagulls have been frantically working Plaice Cove in Hampton for two days straight now- looks like September blitz bird action but I can't for the life of me see what they're feeding on. What would it be at this time of year?
  2. Absolutely- just doing a little research in the middle of cabin fever!
  3. Getting back into surfcasting and saltwater fishing in general after a long hiatus. I happen to love smoked mackerel but don't have access to a boat. Is it possible to catch mackerel in any meaningful quantity from shore in ME or NH? I've googled a bunch but only find references to sabiki rigs from boats. Any ideas or pointers much appreciated. Thanks!
  4. Hey- oldtime SOL member here- been away for about eight years. Hoping to get my 10-year-old son hooked on smelt this winter. If there's anyone willing to help my son and I get started with smelt fishing, I'd love to hear from you. Hope everyone is doing well!
  5. Sacrilege!
  6. The guy in yellow and his brother were badasses. The other folks were a bunch of panicking distractions. Just like a pitcher visualizes his next toss, you can somewhat prepare yourself for situations like that by envisioning your response in advance. That is a great thing that my dad taught me. When I was a kid, he would always be asking me things like "You're swimming and you get caught in a rip tide...what are you going to do?" As I got older, he would ask me similar questions as I began driving. Nothing can fully prepare you for a situation like those folks were in (witness the highly trained cop), but mentally envisioning performing the heimlich, etc, can really help when it comes time to do the right thing.
  7. Oh yeah...that's why I used to hang around this joint!
  8. I thought that name sounded familiar: Charge leads top warden to resign Ah, irony.
  9. I, too, have found that OSB chips added right at the end of a smoking session really finishes the pig off right. I think its the formaldehyde in the glue! BTW- This is a great chart:
  10. Raising a baby and running two businesses. Bussssssssssy.
  11. We are in a valley and have learned to expect 6-8 degrees below the NOAA forecasted low due to cold air drainage. Despite being 12 miles from the coast, we frosted on September 12th this year and have frosted as early as September 9th in the past. We've had about 7 frosts this year, all moderate intensity. Brrrrrrrr.
  12. Good thoughts and prayers sent...
  13. SIM is a point of light on SOL...
  14. Google Dr. Robert Gallo and the origin of AIDS. Read about that for a day or so. Funny business surrounding Lyme disease would not surprise me for a second.
