Howdy all - I was just looking at my combined fishing and hunting license for 2021. Although I paid for a muzzleloader tag (and that is shown in the itemized receipt), the printable license only shows a general firearms tag. I don't remember it that way in the past. Obviously I have some time before this becomes an issue, but just noticed and got curious. Am I missing something?

Fatal Presumptive Shark Attack Off Bailey Island!!
FarmerJeff replied to Roccus7's topic in Coastal Maine/NH Fishing
If only there was some natural mechanism that could do that... something like a large predator, maybe a killer whale or something. Or a shark. Call me crazy. Good to see all the conservationists here valuing the needle moving towards intact ecosystems. Ever look at any of the studies of increased ecological complexity that occurred in Yellowstone after the gray wolf was reintroduced? Having the GWS here is ultimately a very good thing for fisheries. And I put on a black wetsuit and surf 100+ days a year, but I accept the calculated risk. It boggles my mind that people can spend meaningful time on the water and still be of the opinion that the solution is to cull sharks and seals. -
Hey BarryW -if you are who I think you are, I'll see you at the annual meeting later this week!

The seagulls have been frantically working Plaice Cove in Hampton for two days straight now- looks like September blitz bird action but I can't for the life of me see what they're feeding on. What would it be at this time of year?

Mackerel From Shore in Maine and NH...Possible?
FarmerJeff replied to FarmerJeff's topic in Coastal Maine/NH Fishing
Absolutely- just doing a little research in the middle of cabin fever! -
Getting back into surfcasting and saltwater fishing in general after a long hiatus. I happen to love smoked mackerel but don't have access to a boat. Is it possible to catch mackerel in any meaningful quantity from shore in ME or NH? I've googled a bunch but only find references to sabiki rigs from boats. Any ideas or pointers much appreciated. Thanks!

Hey- oldtime SOL member here- been away for about eight years. Hoping to get my 10-year-old son hooked on smelt this winter. If there's anyone willing to help my son and I get started with smelt fishing, I'd love to hear from you. Hope everyone is doing well!

Elephant Garlic vs. "Regular" Garlic

Sacrilege! -
The guy in yellow and his brother were badasses. The other folks were a bunch of panicking distractions. Just like a pitcher visualizes his next toss, you can somewhat prepare yourself for situations like that by envisioning your response in advance. That is a great thing that my dad taught me. When I was a kid, he would always be asking me things like "You're swimming and you get caught in a rip tide...what are you going to do?" As I got older, he would ask me similar questions as I began driving. Nothing can fully prepare you for a situation like those folks were in (witness the highly trained cop), but mentally envisioning performing the heimlich, etc, can really help when it comes time to do the right thing.

I thought that name sounded familiar: Charge leads top warden to resign Ah, irony. -
I, too, have found that OSB chips added right at the end of a smoking session really finishes the pig off right. I think its the formaldehyde in the glue! BTW- This is a great chart:
