In the process of making my niece a small bookshelf for her 1 yr b-day. Will hold her board books and kid stories.

We looked around for kid bookshelves and to be honest the quality or price drove me away. The lower ended ones were particle board and not very sturdy and the high end ones were expensive but not what I'd expect for the money.

Anyway - making one myself out of wood (pine) with some bead board as the back.

I have to ask my sister what color she wants it for my niece's room. I assume I will paint it, but is there paint that will hold up better on a bookshelf? Do they still make oil based paint? I would think that would hold up better then acrylic. Is there some clear coat that should go on after the paint is dried? If so - is it painted or sprayed on.

I don't expect the bookshelf to last my niece til college :p but I want the finish to last as long as she uses it as a child ;)

Thanks for any responses.

Cleaning out my grandfather's garage this weekend I found all his old fishing stuff from when he lived in Florida. A bunch of tackle, rods and reels. I sorted through most of it but was wondering about one of the reels.

It's a black spinning reel with a red drag knob. The model is "DAM Quick 110N," marked on a plaque on one side behind the handle. It seems to be in pretty good shape.

Can anyone give me any info on this reel? Approx. manufacture date, quality of reel for actual use, worth, etc?

roof/attic insulation

I am lucky to have an attic that is big enough to become usable space, however, the floor in insulated but the roof is not. Working in noise control has givenm me a very good understanding of R values, vapor barriers and all basic insulation knowledge. What I amnot sure of is how this applies to roofs, where there are requirements for ventilationa and airflow along the underside of the roof to prevent moisture build up and rotting of the roof boards.

My house is turn of the century and has boards instead of plywood for the roof materials. My understanding is that normally one has soffit vent, and a ridge vent and uses preformed sytrfoam parts in the bays between teh roof joists to allow airflow. I also understand that older home such as mine didn't have ridge or soffit vents because the gaps between the boards allowed the roof to breath.

My questions is, will these gaps plus ridge vent in new roof allow the roof to breath or will I need to install soffit vents as well? If I need to install soffit vent is there something like a circular vent that can be installed (one per bay) or will I need to rip a channel 2-4" wide like I see in new construction.

started off with the best of intentions.

started off with the best of intentions.

I got up early for me on a Saturday and headed out to the freezer. Last night I took my last 25 bucks and bought 4 turkeys at WalMart. I put them in the big freezer out in the shed. When I put them in my car this morning, I had nothing but good thoughts in my heart and soul. I was taking my four turkeys to the local food pantry, so that perhaps four families would be able to have a turkey for Thanksgiving.

I arrived before they opened and was a little shocked to see five or six cars of families already waiting. I walked around to the back to get some help hauling my load inside. We carried the turkeys in where I was a little saddened to see that my turkeys were the only turkeys in the freezer. The food pantry is only open on Saturday morning.

When I walked out and back to my car, a gentleman with a beautiful little girl got out of his car and blessed me. I almost cried. I wish I had had more to give. I was a little sad. Most of those cars had elderly people in them and the rest had young families. But I didn't have anymore. I'm flat busted now until my next measly unemployment check gets here. I've been hunting a job harder than I ever fished, and I'm coming up skunked.

So I thought I'd go to Mom's house. Mom was sitting around and asked me if I'd ride to the post office before I went home. I thought it odd, since Mom has never had a problem going to the post office by herself but then she mentioned we might also go "into town" and see if there were any yard sales. So I go. Only after we're almost to the post office does her ulterior motive come out. She wants me to find my nephew and try to get him to come home to her house on Monday so that he can be rested and clean and straight for Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday.

See, a couple weeks ago, the child's mother decided that it was ok to tell the kid that if he wanted to hang out with his friends then go live on the street. He's 17. Of course he wants to hang out with his friends. So he left. Mom called me that night and asked me to go find him. That night I got to find out where all the local thugs live, where all the drug houses were and were all of society's finest live there in town. I couldn't find him, but I got a name, and a local cop was nice enough to go pick him up for me without filing a report. He met me where we were supposed to meet and I put my nephew in the car. Drunk. High.

He straightened out for a week or so and stayed with my Mom. Then he went off on her because she said no about something. And packed his little bag of clothes and took off. Mom doesn't have legal custody so there was really nothing we can do. I know. I checked. Laws here are funny that way. And since his Mother thought she was teaching him a valuable lesson, she wasn't willing to step in.

About every two or three days, Mom would find a reason to go to town, and once there, she'd make me drive around to find Ian. Just so she could check on him, usually with food. A few times I thought he might be high, but it coulda been a hangover. I wasn't legally allowed to interfere. I got to know his thug friends pretty well... and lucky for me, I was never rude to any of them, though I'd have liked to taken all of them out behind the woodshed for a good beating.

This morning when I arrive at a place I thought he might be his thug friend that lives there came out and talked to me. He wouldn't talk in front of his friends, but he would tell me. Ian almost overdosed last night on pills and weed and liquor. He was in big trouble. Could I please get him off the street before something happened to him? When your thug friends say something like that to your aunt, you're in over your head. I thanked him and went knocking on meth head doors, wondering which one was going to answer with a gun. Breaking the news to my mom was the hardest thing I've ever done. You could see it in her face. She can't do this again. She's got an addict son and has been going through this **** for 20 years.

Mom decided after a couple hours searching to go to the cops. I reminded her again that aside from that one cop who didn't come on til 6, that they wouldn't do anything for us. Mom got pissed. She told me to drive to my sister's house. She said that my sister was going to be a mother once and for all or she'd kick HER ass. My mom doesn't curse.

Sister actually seems scared when I break the news to her. Gets dressed and gets in the car with me. She calls her oldest daughter, who used to be a meth head herself and asks her to help find him. She happens to pull out and see him walking down the road and convinces him to get in the car with her. After a few texts, we meet off the highway at a gas company and Ian ***** when we are all there.

Intervention 101 on the side of the highway. He doesn't remember last night, tries to deny it, but he's so high he can't even keep his eyes open. We all decide he's going to rehab. He has to check into the local hospital first, and it's a damn good thing, because he nearly died again today. He's popping Klonopin, Xanax, Buspar, and some other drug, as well as drinking and smoking weed.

Because he's 17, the counselors have to try to find him a special bed in an adolescent detox/rehab center and it will probably be Monday before they can get him in. So he's at home now with his mother.

I went through his stuff, found his stash and some really disturbing poetry stuff he'd written. I made sure that his mother and the counselors saw it. My mother and I are apparently the only ones he doesn't want to kill.

Anyways, it was a long day. Of course, when I'm dealing with all of this, the third family that we are doing for the Christmas Fund FINALLY returns my call. I ask if I can call her back later.

On a good note, four families who weren't having turkeys before are now having turkey for Thanksgiving, and our third family is absolutely perfect. The mother is a single mother of two boys and a girl... ages 5, 4 and 2. She lives with HER mother, who just broke her hip. Both mother and grandmother work their asses off to make ends meet and I'm going to take the mother shopping sometime next week for her kids. We'll keep the presents here, wrap them up and I've agreed to meet her late Christmas Eve Night after the kids are asleep and help slip the presents under the tree so that when the kids wake up, they will KNOW that Santa was there.

It's been a long ****ing day. Honestly, half of me wants to take the boy out back and just whip his ass for putting my mother through this again. That kid is my mom's heart and soul. He lived with my mom so much he's more like a little brother than a nephew. There's a lot more going on (as there always is) and part of me feels for the kid, but I can't let pity show right now. I'm not going to be an enabler. I am NOT.

I was walking along the seawall on Ocean Ave tonight and wondering what the laws really are. Now beach access has always been an issue, but now after the storm it is even harder and definatley more dangerous to get down to the sand. Now I have been told by some that the "private property" and "no parking" signs on the east side of Ocean Ave do not hold water, and that no one really owns that land? Not trying to start anything here just want to know the laws. Where can one find out? With that being said are we even allowed to legally be on the beach at night? Be careful out there, after the storm it is a long way down to the sand when your climbing down the seawall rocks.

By Elizabeth Newell enewell@govexec.com November 19, 2009
The Government Accountability Office audited a handful of service-disabled veteran-owned small business contracts, and might have discovered the tip of a large iceberg of fraud.

Of more than 100 allegations of fraud and abuse, GAO audited 10 firms between October 2008 and November 2009 and found that ineligible companies improperly received millions of dollars in set-aside and sole source SDVOSB contracts. The audited firms received approximately $100 million in SDVOSB contracts and another $300 million through other small business programs such as the 8(a) program for disadvantaged minority groups and the HUBZone program for firms located in historically underutilized business zones.
According to the Small Business Administration, $6.5 billion in federal contracts were awarded to service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses in fiscal 2008.
The firms GAO studied committed the fraud in several ways. One company owner was not a service-disabled veteran, another was owned by a service-disabled veteran, but he did not control the firm's daily operations, and several SDVOSBs were serving as pass-throughs for large and sometimes foreign corporations. In the case of a pass-through, a firm or team listed a service-disabled veteran as the majority owner, but all work was performed and managed by a nonservice disabled person or firm, in violation of program requirements.
Gregory Kutz, GAO managing director of forensic audits and special investigations, told the House Small Business Committee on Thursday that the case studies show "significant control weaknesses" in the program, including effective fraud prevention by the Small Business Administration.
"The SDVOSB program is essentially an eligibility-based program," Kutz said. "However, neither the SBA, except when responding to a protest, nor contracting officials are currently verifying the eligibility of firms claiming to be SDVOSBs."

Neither SBA nor contracting agencies have processes in place to access Veterans Affairs Department records listing individuals who are valid service-disabled veterans, Kutz said. Contracting officers also are not required to validate a firm's eligibility before an award. And unlike the 8(a) or HUBZone programs, firms professing eligibility are not required to submit documents substantiating this claim.
Perhaps most discouraging, Kutz said, was that in many fraud cases, federal contracting officials were "actively involved" in and aware of the misrepresentation. He cited an example of a contract for furniture at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla., where the contract was awarded to a firm -- essentially a shell company -- owned by a full-time contract employee on the base. "The base director of business operations also told us that MacDill had about $14 million in service-disabled veteran-owned small business sole source and set-aside contracts in 2008, and 90 percent of firms that received these contracts were front companies for large businesses," Kutz told lawmakers.

Committee members of both parties expressed outrage and disgust at the misuse of a program designed to help injured veterans.
"Imagine being a veteran who is injured in Iraq or Afghanistan, yet despite your injuries you still manage to launch your own business. Then imagine finding out that you are losing out on contracts designated for veterans because a big company found out how to get around the rules," said Rep. Nydia Velazquez, D-N.Y. "What kind of message does that send to veterans in this country? We've got to stop it."

Rep. Sam Graves, R-Mo., said fraud alone would be problematic, but in this case it shuts out deserving individuals and firms from crucial opportunities.
"The firms denied contracts are those owned by individuals who made a significant sacrifice in defending our country," Graves said. "That is simply unacceptable."

Lawmakers and GAO both said at the hearing that there must be greater and swifter penalties for those violating the SDVOSB program. While Mills said SBA has recommended that the 10 firms GAO studied be investigated by the SBA inspector general, Kutz said many, if not all, could still be eligible to receive federal dollars.

"It's important when they lie to us and cheat that we do something about it," Kutz said. "You can suspend someone without going through a lengthy three-year process of debarment."
Administrator Karen Mills said SBA was working closely with Veterans Affairs to strengthen oversight of the program, but that primarily SBA is responsible for ensuring SDVOSBs were in fact small businesses, and VA is responsible for ensuring the owners are service-disabled veterans.

"The culture of the SBA is that we will not be the agency of fraud, waste, abuse and mismanagement," Mills said. "We have an aggressive, new attitude towards this; it is explicitly one of our priorities."
Kutz echoed the idea that this priority is relatively new for SBA.
"SBA is good people, but the history of SBA has been as an advocacy organization, not an enforcement organization," he said. "Therefore, you're not going to have the right kind of people, necessarily, that are very good at this. But I would argue that if you're going to be an advocate for small businesses, you need to deal with the integrity of the programs, and today's hearing is a good start."

I have been fishing for a very long time and all this time I have used ONLY open face spinning reels. A few days ago I have tried my friend's Daiwa baitcaster and liked it a lot so...went over my promise to NEVER buy a baitcaster, went to Bass Pro Shop and got a Daiwa Tierra reel and an Okuma Livebait 7'6" rod. The guy behind the counter filled the spool (free) with their brand of 12lb line and I hit the lake today. I like the reel a lot, but got a lot of bird nests (first time I use one of those reels) and at the end I took the line off the spool and was more curly than a sheep's hair. The guy next to me said the problem with bird nests, a lot of time is due to bad line that is too springy, that would coil back by itself if left without tension (my case) so...
what line to get (8-10lbs) that is soft/limp and good for this type of reel.
Please help. Thanks.
