March 16, 1999:

Here it is Thursday, another weekend right around the corner...I ask myself again...could this be the weekend I finally get back into surf fishing? I haven't been in 2 month to the day...that's no kind of fishing in 60 days...certainly a new personal record...not one I hope to repeat or break anytime in the next 10 years or so! It's almost embarrassing...there's no reason for not at least trout fishing...or float tubing some local puddles. I hope to make amends shortly for this gross oversight of not fishing...there are many folks out there right now, catching bass on worms. Not that I find that overly interesting, it does mean they are around and they are eating...two things required of them before I can force myself to begin what certainly should be a phenomenal year...let's call it "The Year of the Unicorn." Has a nice ring to it...I wonder if it's on the Chinese calendar yet? :)  I really do anticipate this being a year that all of us will remember...hopefully it will never be referred to as "the good ole days" as many are prone to believe in the light of the ridiculous slot type limits being adopted by NJ. Other states have better ideas, we just keep on giving away the fish with the warped mentality of "if we don't keep them, somebody else will"....how ridiculous does that sound?  Are we being governed by some little kids who look at the great natural resource as a game they have to keep up with? It seems so...but I won't go there, it's being covered daily on Surf Talk...and they are doing a fine job with it there!

So, I finally got somewhere with the Lamiglas Surf rod situation...seems all you gotta do is get in touch with the national sales manager and all of the sudden, you get answers that you don't mind hearing! Nice guy John is (maybe he's still looking at the page ;^)) Seriously, he did help me out immensely, today I get to follow through with the contact he gave me and I should be able to offer the great Lamiglas rods here and be able to give an accurate ETA on delivery. That was my holdout point before, we had a source for them, except I was told delivery could range anywhere from one week to 2 months!!  What kinda range is that? So, I bailed on that scene and began the search for somewhere that has the rods in stock and can give me a good idea how long it would take to get them here....that way I can offer them with a straight face...no one hates more than me when I have to explain why things aren't yet where they are supposed to be!  Also, many other deals have been rectified, more tomorrow as I nail down the Seaguar and Yozuri stuff.  I'm after a good source for Bombers...that's a tough one it seems....the one place that has them at a fair price requires a $2,500 initial order...I don't need that many bombers right away!?!  :)  The Deadly Dozen Teasers assortments are really moving...you guys must be starved for excellent teasers! ;) You keep ordering them, I'll keep pumping them out as fast as I can...right now, I'm good to go for the next 20 or so that get ordered...I've somehow miraculously been able to keep up with the tying of these puppies! The next thing like that assortment will be a couple different jig assortments...as recommended to me by one of our compadres here. I like the assortment idea, it gets something covered well for you newer guys...like an inlet assortment....a surf assortment.....even a Cape Cod Canal assortment! The list goes on...you let me know what you want...I'll do what I can to get it for ya! Yes, DPowell...yer "funny" wrong-handed reel is on it's way!  BTW...I saw yer picture on your AMSA Sportfishermen page! I dunno...you look rigged for bait fishing there....I'll have to keep an eye on ya when you come to the "Fling" in May! Another point...anyone planning on coming to the "Spring Fling" on May 19th...please register with the link above. The closer we can get to an accurate number of folks, the easier the planning will be on this end and thus the more enjoyable the experience on your end....I know...it's over 2 months away! True...but registration will be closed for the last two weeks...so you really only have 6 weeks....and the way they are flying, it'll be like a blink of yer eye!  I am working on a map, directions, lodging options for our distant travelers and other goodies to help make your trips here enjoyable. It will be a "BYOB" gathering...that's "bring yer own bait" for you bait guys! So far, the only volunteer I have for team captains in Phil L...we now have to administer the written test for Phil...hope he's been studying! ;)

Anyone else getting tired of the layout of this page? I am....maybe I shouldn't be...but I am!  I'm thinking about changing it a little...kinda spring cleaning if you will.  I will be making the addition of some primo advertisers in the near future...no "random banner" crap...no links that record every bit of data from your browser and then cross references it with a database provided by online sales sites...I refuse to use any banner or script provided by "Doubleclick"...they have gone too far with invading your privacy. It's old news now...but many probably don't think about it...I do. If you click on a banner provided by Doubleclick, it sets a cookie in your computer...that cookie will cross reference with cookies set by sites that you have made purchases from...here's the bad part! Now they have you pegged! They know everywhere you go, everything you do...it's an absolute invasion of privacy! The cookie the ad set is used to match up your name, address, zip code, phone number...and your purchasing habits.  It's true.  So, before you click on or support a site using these Doubleclick banners...think about it...you think it's fair that an outside advertising company now knows everything about you and knows all the purchases you make? I don't. Before you click a banner...hold the mouse over it...at the bottom of the screen, you'll see a URL pop up...that's where you will go when you click the ad...if it says Doubleclick...don't. Some sites have no regard for their visitors....you guys are family and I care! I promised you all in the beginning I wouldn't "sell you out" for advertising dollars and I will continue to stick to my promise! I am amazed at the trash otherwise somewhat useful sites will allow to "pop up" in ad banners...things that have ZERO relevance to fishing or the outdoors...just for a couple bucks. I value this sites reputation and the respect that you all have earned is worth more than a couple bucks...you won't be sold out, ever. When you see an ad here or a link here, you have my assurance that it is a good site, a good product, or good information....I check everything we put here...100%. I have "eyes" that watch for things that don't belong both on the board and the chat...the lack of problems is a reflection of the quality of the people here, I once again thank all of you and look forward to sharing "The Year of the Unicorn" with all of you!

Sincerely,

Tim Surgent

March 17, 2000:

Here it is Friday...and they are talking about a chance of flurries!??!  Can a guy get a break here or what! This was to be "it", the weekend I catch my first striper since the season opened (it wouldn't be fair to say the first of the year...they were caught throughout January!).  I may still get out...my buddy Charlie is not much into the cold wet nights this early in the year...for that matter, neither am I.  The past couple nights have been gorgeous...a few "almosts" as far as getting a line in the water, but it was not meant to be. I'm trying to not rush...but not fishing at all in 2 months is starting to wear on me a bit! It'll happen soon enough...patience.

New cool thing is up! It's something I've been working on for a while now...it is tested, it is cool, and it is now ready for you guys to utilize! There are so many things going on around us, events, fishing trips, TV shows, club meetings, speakers at tackle shops....you name it....it's difficult to keep track of and even more difficult to keep all of you abreast of....what's the answer?  How about a StripersOnline Community Calendar! Yup, it's all set to go.  Another way I would like to use this...and I'm not sure if I should setup a separate calendar to do so or not...I would like to have one used as a "Buddy" fishing calendar. For you guys that are far from the shore or have very limited but planned opportunities to get out and fish but hate to always go alone. There are over 1000 folks here...all the ones I've ever had any contact with were first class and top notch...and fun to fish with even! I imagine that as we all get know each other from Surf Talk and  Surf Chat  that it will be easy for folks to offer to meet each other to share a night in the suds! Yes, I like to fish alone...but I also enjoy fishing with good friends, it adds to the whole experience. So, for you guys that don't have to many buds down "da shore" you'll be able to put up the day and time you are planning a trip down and see if anyone would be interested in hooking up and going with you. Hey, you can even car pool if you're coming from a long way off...and with gas prices looking at $2.00 a gallon this summer....we're gonna all need to car pool more! :)

That's it for now, I'm still up to my arm pits in stuff going on...but I did place an order with a big wholesaler who had the stuff delivered to my door the next morning that gives me some hope that maybe I've found a reliable source for 90% of the things I want to carry! I will be placing a large order in the next day or so with them....and then I'll be adding a bunch of new pages of stuff on the site! So, as always, enjoy your Friday...I'll do my best to be in the  Surf Chat around lunch time...I'm having a couple guys over in the evening so we'll likely have both computers on the chat again for the monster chat at 9pm! It's almost fishing time folks!!!! Blow the dust of your surf fishing gear, grab your bait, lures, plugs, flies...whatever...and get some plans ready, they are already here!! :)

The Deadly Dozen Teasers assortments are really moving...you guys must be starved for excellent teasers! ;) You keep ordering them, I'll keep pumping them out as fast as I can...right now, I'm good to go for the next 20 or so that get ordered...I've somehow miraculously been able to keep up with the tying of these puppies! March 18, 2000:

It's Saturday...if you didn't have a calendar, you could tell it was Saturday mainly by how miserable it was out last night and how cold it is today! What a gorgeous week...followed by the coldest, snowy night and frigid morning we've had in quite a while...yup, the weekend!  It's supposed to be much nicer by tomorrow...but that's little consolation for those of us who prefer to fish on Friday nights. I'm sure the worming/bait guys are continuing to catch the fish, they've been doing pretty well right along since March 1...things are getting better with more and more fish being taken on the wiggly baits.  I'm not even going to continue to guess when I am setting forth for my first official fly fishing trip this year...I'll just let you all know after it happens!

Tony "12 beavers" was here last night...but he didn't have my new pretty pearlescent pink sided plugs with him! :( He will have them today or tomorrow...or so he says anyway!  I am looking forward to these plugs, it's a very natural coloration and will make an excellent daytime plug or even a great one for those occasions that you find yourself out there at night on a full or very bright moon! So, when I get them, I will immediately put up the pictures!

It's Saturday....that means new Dave Powell's excellent surf humor cartoons!   is up!  I'm runnin' outta ways to say how amused I am by Dave's surf humor...I'll just have to start saying "The new Rockfish is up :D  "  Thanks Dave, I look forward to each and everyone of these!  Also, DPowell's been busy saying nice things about our home here...and I'd like to welcome all you guys that Dave sent over here! Make yourselves at home, we look forward to your company...as they say...any friend of DP's is a friend of ours...or something like that!

I'd also like to belatedly welcome the two newest members from here to the Shark River Surf Anglers, TomC and ArneP....welcome guys, on behalf of the club and from me personally! This is going to really be some year for our club, we have been putting together an arsenal of folks, some new, some grizzled veterans...most right in the middle somewhere!  I'm sure you guys will fit right in, nothin' but good folks in our club!

  That's it...it's Saturday!  Enjoy the cold! :(

Sincerely,

Tim Surgent

In loving memory of Chris Rogers

March 21, 2000:

Last night, after dinner, I popped open the message board, much as I often do. Each time anyone of us opens up the message board, it's a mixture of anticipation and curiosity...we never know who may have answered a question of ours, who may have appeared on the board after months of absence, who we may have unintentionally offended, or who is going to make us laugh out loud as we are all separated by physical distance yet all bought together in the spirit of things. Last night I saw that a young man had died...a young husband, a young father....and a kindred spirit to ours in that he was also a fisherman and a hunter.  I didn't know him personally, but he knew my friends and shared my love of the ocean and of nature, so in spirit Chris and I shared things together, yet separately. Carole and I prayed last night for Chris' family and his friends that the Lord Jesus Christ will hold them, comfort them, and help them to see beyond this terrible tragedy that robbed the world of another good young man. Much as we all have our own lives, our own problems, our own daily grinds to "worry" about, when something like this happens to a man as young as Chris, it certainly makes us all stop and take note. I'd like to dedicate today's page in loving memory of Chris Rogers, a man I never met but in spirit shared so much with.........

Sincerely,

Tim Surgent
