Fall Fling II - The saga continues!
October 19, 2001:

Fall Fling I Memories
BrianZ and Crazy Al with a couple of nice Fall Fling I fish. These guys stuck it out all night long while most of us slept - and it paid off in the quiet of pre-dawn! Live eels...man I hate fishing with live eels! :-)

Even though the smoke has settled and the fires are mostly out, there is a tremendous need for our collective help - Help Start the Healing

With the Rhody Fling behind us and my little jaunt to MV in the past, we now move onto the Fall Fling II on Long Island! The Rhody Fling was a wonderful success - mainly thanks to the fellers that did so much of the local legwork, they deserve the thanks! So a big giant thank you to Fish-Eye, Crafty Angler, and Dennis Z for helping organize the get togethers...and for maintaining composure on Saturday while 7 of us slept clean through the afternoon meeting! Oooops! Turns out fishing all night took a toll, not a one of us woke up before nearly 3PM! My apologies again for missing that gathering. Thanks to all those who entertained us or guided some groups on those windy evenings - Cowhunter, Habs, Tattoo, Dennis Z, and others I know I'm forgetting. Also, big thanks to Iron Mike for the entertainment - we're still trying to unravel some of the secret Rhody code-speak he uses - man, he's got it mastered! When the Fling season calms down, I'll be putting together a "recap" page from the photos that were taken at the Rhody Fling - but I'm leaving out all the ones involving the "marriage" of Habs and bassmaster - I'm still worried about those two So if you have any photos from the Rhody Fling that you might like to see used, please email them to me at tims@stripersonline.com and try to desribe them a lil' so I know what's what in the pictures.

Now back to the Fall Fling II - first, the details are available by clicking here --->>> Fall Fling II . The outlook for the fishing is very, very good - actually, after numerous phone calls from the Fling area, I'd say the outlook was perhaps excellent to "holy smokes!" The weather should be absolutely fall like - sunny and in the 60's during the day, clear and in the mid 40's during the nights. The winds are forecast to be from SW to WSW between 5-15kts for both Friday and Saturday night. The moon this evening is 2 days old, 3 tomorrow - the first 3days before and after the new moon have always been considered "big fish moons" in all the records I've ever kept. From the club records I used to keep, more fish over 20#'s were caught on artificials during those 6 days than the other 22 days of the lunar period combined. Likewise, the 3 days before and after the full moon yeilded more fish over 20# on bait than the other 22 days of the lunar period. So we got that goin' for us All in all, everything points to some exceptional fishing opportunity for the Fling - my only reservation is the fact that there will be many, many people out this weekend in this area. Both in boats and from shore - there is the chance that the increased human activity in the area could keep the fish either down or out of range. If you ain't scoring Satruday night, instead of hitting the normal spots, look instead for the most inconvenient and out of the way locations where the fish can feed in peace and quiet. That will likely be the key if the people traffic becomes too heavy. At least with the very dark moon, the fish will be more active and less spooky than last years Fling...we'll have that in our favor. I've been told that it's gonna be important to bring jigs - from 1/2oz to 1 1/2oz - and lots of rubbah like shads, Sluggo, Fin-S, twisties, etc. I always bring lots of jigs and Smilin' Bills whenever fishing places like the Fall Fling zone where there are decent currents. And a big thanks to Diamond Tackle for donating a bunch of their pure tin creations to hand out to the folks at the Fling! Also, Crash and Cool Hand Fluke have been busy gathering and preparing to burn all manner of grillable goodies for yer chewin' pleasure on Saturday afternoon - I understand there will be dogs, burgers, Brauts, and even pork chops - yah, I wasn't sure about the pork chop thing either - but Crash insisted! :-) So these guys get a double big thank you for all their efforts! Also, give 'em a hug when ya see 'em! ;-) Gotta finish packin' everything up, leaving here in about 6 hours! See ya at the Fling - dress warm, 40 degrees with any wind and wet parts can be quite an eye opener!

Sincerely,

Tim Surgent
